Erin Ramsey '23 to Study in Kazakhstan as a Boren Scholar

Erin Ramsey '23, who majored in Russian and minored in chemistry, will have the opportunity to build upon her Russian fluency as a Boren Scholar.

Ramsey, from Louisville, Kentucky, will be taking classes at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where she will be furthering her Russian studies as part of the Language Flagship Program. 

 is designed to increase U.S. knowledge of languages and countries deemed to have security interest for the U.S. Recipients must agree to a service requirement to work either in a federal agency with national security responsibilities or in an academic field related to the area of study for which the scholarship was given.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to improve my Russian while also expanding my worldview by engaging with the Kazakh language and culture," says Ramsey. "I'm most looking forward to immersing myself in life in Almaty through staying with a host family."

After returning from the program, Ramsey hopes to apply her experiences to pursuing graduate education in Russian and linguistics.
